Commissioner Bob Doherty called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm with a quorum present.
Minutes Kevin Culbertson moved to approve the minutes of the February meeting with the following addendum to state that “4 goalies in each age bracket were selected to move on.” (motion SECONDED and PASSED) Guest Bob Doherty introduced James Cefaly of the LA Kings Fan Development. James informed the board of the Kings “Tip a King” fundraising event that will be held on February 24, 2008 at Universal Studios. The Tip a King event is the Kings’ fundraising drive to raise money for their community outreach programs. It is a big team autograph signing event. This year Marcel Dionne and Marty McSorley will be there. It is $1 for an autograph and $2 for a picture. All the proceeds go to the Kings Care Foundation.
Commissioner’s Report Bob Doherty informed the board that the SCAHA bylaw requires that the commissioner give the board a 15 day notice for the annual meeting. March’s board meeting is SCAHA’s annual meeting. The annual meeting serves two purposes, one is to hold the elections for next year and two, is to vote on the rules and regulations. Ron White motioned to move the voting on the rules and regulations to after the March meeting. (motion SECONDED and PASSED)
Bob Doherty reported on the status of the LAHOA contract negotiations. At this time there is no update. Rosemary Voulelikas motioned to negotiate with LAHOA to reinstate LAHOA as the officiating body for SCAHA and Louis Soltero seconded. Discussion followed and motion did not carry.
Discussion continued regarding the officiating rates. Bob Doherty read the rates for the current season for all age divisions. Sandy stated that she feels this discussion is premature if we are going to wait a month and see if LAHOA is going to submit a proposal. Ron White motioned to wait one month and let LAHOA respond to our inquiry on whether they want to submit their proposal for next year. (motion SECONDED and PASSED)
Bob Doherty informed the board of the Tier State playoff results. SCAHA won every level except for the AAA16U division where NORCAL won.
Based on the results of the CAHA State playoffs, the following teams (including host teams) are advancing to the Pacific District playoffs:
Bob Doherty informed the board that March is the annual meeting and elections will be held for the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner positions which are two year terms. The remaining SCAHA Executive board positions are one year terms appointed by the Commissioner and ratified by the SCAHA board. If there is anyone that would like to run for SCAHA commissioner and/or Deputy Commissioner, please email Bob Doherty as soon as possible.
Bob Doherty summarized the CAHA January meeting. CAHA has implemented a state wide learn to play hockey program. Basically starter kits (everything but stick and skates) will be purchased up to $17,000 and distributed to clubs and/or rinks that qualify for the program. At a minimum, 20 kits will be issued to each program that qualifies. Up to 400 kits may be purchased and based on the membership 1/3 would be made available to Norcal and 2/3 to SCAHA, which could mean a $6000 investment for SCAHA. Ron White motioned to have SCAHA participate in the CAHA state wide learn to play hockey program and endorse a $20 commitment for each starter kit, up to $6000. (motion SECONDED and PASSED)
Deputy Commissioner’s Report Sandy Blumberg reported that match penalties and parent ejections are way down as compared to last year at this time. She advised the presidents to remind their coaches of the CAHA “leaving the bench” penalty rule. There were 4 teams that were penalized for this at the CAHA Tier state playoffs. SCAHA will ask the referees to talk to the coaches and players about not leaving the bench until everything is good to go. Sandy stated that it has to start here in league so that when teams get to states they are aware of the CAHA rule.
Sandy reported that Therese Phillips, CAHA Youth Chair, has asked for feedback regarding incorporating AAA into the AA schedule. She would also like feedback on the playdown weekend.
