Bridget Hopkinson moved to approve the minutes of the August 13, 2008 meeting.

                                                                                                (motion SECONDED and PASSED)

Guest

Sandy Blumberg introduced Art Munda of Positive Coaching Alliance. Positive Coaching Alliance is a character building program based out of Stanford University and they provide primarily sport education programs for coaches. They work with youth sport organizations and with high schools, colleges, etc. He gave a brief history of the program and its concepts and distributed a handout to all of the presidents. Rosemary Voulelikas informed the board that the LA Jr. Kings are in their second year of partnering with the Positive Coaching Alliance program and are very happy with the program.

Sandy Blumberg introduced Brent Tubbs from LAHOA who gave an update regarding the online scheduling Arbiter program. The 4 schedulers are listed on the LAHOA web site as well as some of the supervisors for each club.  Both the supervisors and the schedulers will be performing evaluations this year as part of their stipend duties. Disciplinary issues this year will be reviewed by Art Kitano, SCAHA Referee-in-Chief, Brent Tubbs and Sandy Blumberg among others. The LAHOA meeting is scheduled for Sept. 30th at the Toyota Sports Center.

Commissioner’s/Deputy Commissioner’s Report

Sandy Blumberg reported on behalf of the commissioner who was absent.

Sandy reiterated to the board that the club is not permitted to contact the LAHOA scheduler directly to change games especially for A/B games. All issues with the schedule must be directed to SCAHA and not the LAHOA scheduler.

Sandy Blumberg reported that CAHA has yet to receive bids for the sate Championships. Sandy stated that Therese Phillips, CAHA Youth Council Chair will be accepting bids up until the Youth Council meeting that is being held on Friday, September 12, 2008. Sandy summarized the state championship dates. State ‘B’ is March 27-29, Sate ‘A’ is April 3-5 and Tier I Peewees is February 6-8 and the balance of Tier is February 19-22.

Sandy informed the board of some of the scheduling issues and apologized for the late release of the schedule. There were teams that folded at the last minute and apologized for the multiple changes that occurred. Sandy Blumberg reiterated that it is the club’s responsibility to inform the board of any ice changes. They will not entertain communication from the rinks directly. All issues with ice slots, etc., must be communicated to SCAHA by the club’s president and/or ice convener. And finally, the club must triple check all changes to a draft schedule and communicate to SCAHA any problems. They can not do this after the schedule has been posted.

Sandy Blumberg informed the board that Larry Cahn resigned as the A.C.E. Coordinator. The SCAHA Executive Committee has interviewed Nancy Hodge for the A.C.E. Coordinator as well as for a Director–at-Large position and is asking the board to ratify its recommendation. Jason Galea motioned to approve Nancy Hodge as the new A.C.E. Coordinator and as a Director-at-Large for SCAHA.                                                                         (motion SECONDED and PASSED)

Sandy Blumberg stressed that the presidents speak to their coaches and have them explain the game start line-up to their players in addition to the CAHA rule of players leaving the bench. SCAHA had to suspend a coach for a player leaving the bench during an altercation just this past weekend. She reminded the presidents that the rule was modified to suspend coaches if their players leave the bench for 30 days.

Staff Reports

Member Services – Wendy Goldstein reported that she is still missing some player-ups. Please get them in as soon as possible. Technically, players should not be playing until player-up paperwork is in. She reminded the presidents that coaches must be registered and successfully screened before they can be rostered on a team. Wendy distributed a list of the player fees for each club. Please issue payment to SCAHA within 10 days.

Treasurer – Bob Driffill distributed the financial statements as of August 31, 2008. Bob stated that last month the board approved operating this year with last year’s budget until such time a new budget is presented for approval. He stated that they should be able to present this year’s budget at the next SCAHA meeting.

Sandy Blumberg reported on behalf of Laurie Boaz. SCAHA has received to date about 70 scholarship assistance applications. Awardees receiving scholarships will be notified by regular mail during the month of November. The checks will be distributed to the clubs for application to the December dues.

Ice Convener – Chris Carcerano summarized all the problems he encountered in releasing the preseason schedule. Several clubs did not provide SCAHA with the required ice slots, he had to rework the schedule twice as a result of 3 teams dropping, and several clubs failed to review the draft schedules within the prescribed deadline.

Chris reiterated that SCAHA does not reschedule Tier II games. This is entirely up to the two teams in question. Please follow rule 26.11 when rescheduling and inform Chris of the pending reschedule as well as the date and time once it has been finalized.

Statistician – Annie Fisher informed the board that the first list of suspensions will be released this upcoming Friday. She advised all the presidents to remind their managers that all games home and away must be reported online via the game summary report. Sandy added that coaches must be reminded that if they are serving a game suspension, they are not permitted to have contact with their players. They are not allowed in the locker room before the game, after the game and they can not be near the vicinity of the bench during the game. Annie reminded that the Tier II teams need to submit their rosters and CAHA Playoff deposits by September 15, 2008, if they have not done so.

A.C.E. Coordinator

Nancy Hodge reminded the board that there are coaching certification clinics coming up this month for Level 1, 2 and 3 for the weekend of September 26-29 at Glacial Gardens in Lakewood.

New Business

None at this time.

Other

Laura Ryan asked when the bids would be available for the SCAHA playoffs. Sandy answered they should be ready towards the later part of October.

Rosemary Voulelikas reminded the board of the CAHA Membership renewal due September 15, 2008.
