MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS PRESENT/ABSENT
Commissioner Robert Doherty called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm.
Minutes Laura Ryan moved to approve the minutes of the November 12, 2008 meeting. (motion SECONDED and PASSED)
Commissioner’s Report Bob Doherty reported on the Executive’s meeting with Hockey Giant. Nancy Hodge will work with Hockey Giant to put forth a proposal and present at the next meeting.
Deputy Commissioner’s Report Sandy Blumberg reported on the LAHOA meeting on Nov. 25, 2008. LAHOA has started and will continue evaluating officials. There have been a lot of problems with players and mouth pieces. USA Hockey rule states that mouth pieces can not be clear. This is a 10 minute misconduct penalty. In addition, there has been a lot of sass talk directed to the officials from the players and coaches. Sandy is considering inviting coaches to hearings. This past Saturday she needed to hold about 9 hearings and only managed to hold 6 hearings. Maybe if the coaches sat through this process they would be more appreciative and understanding of the process involved.
LAHOA Report Rick Ramirez reported on the evaluations of officials and on mentoring of officials. LAHOA would like to have a 4th official on the ice during Mites and Squirt games. Kevin Culbertson stated that he did not feel that it was necessary to have four officials on the ice. He would rather see a more experienced official on the ice shadowing the less experienced. Rosemary Voulelikas added that shadowing of officials at Toyota Sports Center during in-house games and SCAHA Mite games has been very successful. LAHOA is having a seminar in Simi Valley on the 24th of January.
SDHRA Report Mark Stook and Dan Ellison of the San Diego Hockey Referee Association distributed a brief report dated Jan. 14, 2009. Dan Ellison reported on the various steps they are taking to answer SCAHA’s inquiry on how they are working to improve the level of officiating in the San Diego region. They have about 80 officials registered with the association with only 60 of them actually working. Dan Ellison stated that he will send Sandy Blumberg a schedule of their meetings and welcome SCAHA’s presence.
Staff ReportsMember Services – Wendy Goldstein distributed the player fee charts showing outstanding balances owed by clubs. This includes any new players that clubs may have added. Wendy stated that there are two clubs that she is missing “A” rosters from. They are the Channel Islands Riptides and the CA Stars.
Statistician – Annie Fisher stated there is nothing to report at this time. She will be sending the list of suspended players via email, tomorrow as usual.
Ice Convener – Bob Doherty reported on behalf of Chris Carcerano who is absent. There are a few remaining games that still need to be rescheduled as a result of the fires. Chris is working on the SCAHA Playoff Bid packets and they should be ready for distribution later this week. Bob Doherty read a statement from Chris Carcerano who thanked everyone who volunteered their time; coaches, evaluators and registration staff in assisting with the SCAHA pre-Select camp.
Treasurer’s Report Bob Driffill distributed the financial statements dated December 31, 2008. Not all of the SCAHA Pre-Select Camp expenses have been expensed out. About $17,000 in scholarships were distributed under the scholarship assistance program; the remaining scholarship money to be awarded through the Champs and Carmen Starr college scholarship programs.
Referee-in-Chief Report Art Kitano reported on the relationship between LAHOA and SCAHA. He stated that there have been great strides in keeping lines of communication open and thus insuring a great relationship between the two organizations.
A.C.E. Coordinator Nancy Hodge stated there is no report at this time.
New Business SCAHA Pre-Select Camp LeAnn Doherty reported on the SCAHA pre-Select camp. There were three medical waivers registered at the camp. All the proper documentations were filed and the injured players showed up to the camp to give their paperwork. These players do not automatically get selected and/or make it on the list advancing to the CAHA Camp. The league makes a recommendation to CAHA with regards to these players and it is up to CAHA to place them on the list or not depending on the number of open spots they have. LeAnn stated that she performed a quick audit of the rankings of the players from last year to this year and reported that the rankings are changing, which is a good thing. Players are not automatically ranked by their reputation. In fact there were a lot of “blind evaluations” performed by coaches who did not know players and based their evaluations on their performance on the ice during the camp. These rankings are not available for distribution.
SCAHA Playoff Committee Sandy Blumberg informed the board to send her an email if they wish to be part of the SCAHA playoff Committee. Sandy Blumberg reported on the rally towels that CAHA will be distributing to the players at the CAHA state championships. She is proposing that SCAHA do one as well. Rosemary Voulelikas motioned to approve the expenditure of up to $3000 for rally towels for the added line item of playoff memorabilia. We would need to change the date on the SCAHA logo. (motion SECONDED and PASSED) Adjourn Meeting was adjourned at 8:18 pm |
