Minutes

                                                                                                (motion SECONDED and PASSED)

Guest Speaker

Chris Crotty, LA Kings Fan Development distributed an information packet about the NHL Draft. The tickets to the event are free and are available online and are good for both days. All SCAHA players are being asked to wear their club jerseys. SCAHA will have an information booth. Presently, 1200 tickets have been redeemed so far by SCAHA families. He spoke briefly about the NHL coach’s clinic. The 2010-2011 NHL season schedule will be released on June 22.

Commissioner’s Report

Robert Doherty spoke briefly about SCAHA presidents missing the SCAHA meetings. Clubs must have representation at the SCAHA meetings whether it is the club president or a designee that attends. SCAHA will be placing some clubs on probation for non attendance to the SCAHA meetings. The first step is administrative probation where the clubs are given a warning. The second step is full probation where the club’s teams will be deemed post season ineligible. And the third step is removal from the league.

Robert Doherty spoke briefly about tryouts and recruiting. AAA teams are allowed to recruit and AA teams are not. To deliberately hold AAA tryouts with the intent of actually having an AA team and then drop to AA is unethical. Robert reiterated that this was morally wrong and that he would hope that the club presidents continue to maintain a high level of integrity running their clubs and not circumvent the rules.

CAHA Youth Council meeting is next Friday. The CAHA Board meeting is on Saturday. If there are any items the club presidents would like to have placed on the agenda please send them to Bob and/or Sandy Blumberg.

Deputy Commissioner’s Report

Sandy Blumberg reminded the board that at the last meeting there were two outstanding rules that needed to be clarified grammatically and/or made clearer. The first rule is 20.09 where SCAHA was asked to consolidate and to clarify the rule as to whether Screening was part of the process.

Proposed rule 20.09 change to read: “Team representatives, which include coaches, assistant coaches, and managers, must be registered with SCAHA, CAHA and USA Hockey prior to taking part in any SCAHA activities. In addition, anyone involved in on-ice activities must also be registered with USA Hockey and have completed the CAHA Screening process and appeared on the CAHA screening list prior to being rostered. Fines, sanctions, and/or suspensions shall be assessed to clubs and participants for violations of this rule.”

The second rule is 26.11 regarding Tier II re-scheduling. There was one bullet point that created some confusion with regards to who was responsible for paying what, etc., based on the cancellation notice. The confusion in the rule as written is that it makes an additional reference to games with less than 7 days cancellation notice and the officiating expense. She reminded the board that the beginning of the rule states that the cancellation request is more than 7 days notice. To have verbiage with regards to less than 7 days notice is a misnomer and should not really be there. For games being cancelled with less than 7 days notice, the LAHOA contract states that the officiating fees are payable in full and we do not need to have it stated here. Sandy stated that she removed the reference and added two bullets to the rule to clarify as to who pays.

Proposed rule 26.11 additional bullet points to read:

·         If the Home team cancels the game they shall provide a new game at the same venue at no cost to the visiting team.

·         If the Away team cancels the game they shall reimburse the home team for the full cost of the ice for the game.

Bridget Hopkinson moved to approve the changes to the rules 20.09 and 26.11 as proposed.

                                                                                                (motion SECONDED and PASSED)

LAHOA/SDHA Report

Norm Kitano informed the board that he will be meeting with his seminar committee to go over issues that clubs may want the officials to look at more closely, basically point of emphasizes such as checking from behind calls, boarding, etc. Other issues that they will be looking at are head contact calls as well as score sheet maintenance. Norm stated that if the club presidents have other issues they can email him at president@lahoa.com.

Staff Reports

Member Services – Wendy Goldstein stated that the Tier I LOI’s will be due for submission a week after tryouts. Same applies to the Tier II LOI’s and A/B LOI’s.  The delinquency list will be updated and sent on the Friday morning. And finally, make sure that your coaches who need to get re-screened do so now.

Ice Convener – Bob Doherty reported on behalf of Chris Carcerano who is absent. Chris completed the preliminary SCAHA calendar which at best is a rough draft and it will only be released once CAHA releases theirs since many of the events are contingent upon CAHA’s dates. Some of the key dates and/or changes to note from the SCAHA calendar are:

·         4 x preseason games instead of 5 (Christmas and New Year’s falls on weekends this year and to keep the 16 game season intact, need to have only 4 preseason games)

·         Last date to drop from AA to A/B is September 15 to be included in the regular season schedule.

·         The regular season A/B team declarations are due at 10 pm on Sunday, September 26th. (There will be only 3 preseason games prior to that date for review).

·         All CAHA Tier II and Girls’ weekends may change; waiting for CAHA to finalize.

·         SCAHA Pre-Select Camp is tentatively scheduled for the second week of December.

Clubs fielding Girls’ team should be sending that information to Chris Carcerano as soon as possible. SCAHA will schedule Girls’ exhibition games around the CAHA Girls’ weekends. For the older Girls’ teams, 19U, SCAHA will consider additional bye weekends provided the information is sent to Chris as soon as possible. In other words, in order to participate in the SCAHA schedule, these additional weekends must be submitted upfront prior to the release of the SCAHA schedule.

The SCAHA schedule, standing and roster information is now hosted by the web site. If anyone notices any problems and/or errors with the web site, please email Chris Carcerano with the feedback. The Executive Committee is still working on a new online form for game summaries. The new form will be available before the start of the season.

Statistician – No report at this time.

Treasurer’s Report

Bob Driffill distributed the financial statements dated May 31, 2010 to the board. Any questions, please contact Bob Driffill.

Director-at-Large Report

Kevin Culbertson informed the board that the SCAHA Financial Assistance Scholarship forms

should be available by the next meeting.

A.C.E. Coaching Coordinator Report

Wendy Goldstein reported on behalf of Nancy Hodge who is absent. The Level 1, 2 and 3 coaching

clinics are being held in Valencia, July 23, 24 and 25th. Registration is available on the

USA Hockey web site. The Level 4 coaching clinic is being held in Las Vegas, August 19-22. It is

being held at the Stratosphere Hotel; cost $50 a night. The reservation number is 1-800-998-6937,

and the reservation code is C-UHCS.

New Business

Ben Cohen informed the board that Simi Valley, Valencia and Oxnard will be meeting to review USA

Hockey’s ADM program with respect to implementation of the ADM program at these three rinks. If

interested contact Larry Bruyere at 818-292-2904 and his email address is bruyere444@aol.com.

Rosemary Voulelikas asked if the three clubs will be implementing the ADM for this season and

asked if they would pull their Mite teams out of SCAHA. Ben Cohen stated that they are meeting to

review and discuss and if they decide to go forward then they will implement both, meaning form a

tournament team from the in-house program and CAHA number. Bob Doherty reminded that the

SCAHA Bylaws 4.04 state that all teams of member clubs must be part of SCAHA. The facility can

form a tournament team from their in-house teams but a club such as Valencia can not

form a tournament team and not be part of SCAHA.

NHL Draft

SCAHA will have an information table/booth at the draft. If any of the clubs have any promotional information they would like to be on the table, please see Bob Doherty. The NHL Coach’s clinic is on the Thursday before the draft. It is a once in a lifetime experience and Bob Doherty highly recommends it.

Adjourn

Meeting was adjourned at 9:11 pm.
